Beware if you are driving Fiat Linea on Goodyear tyres

This blog is not to blame any multinational company but just to share my experiences with dealing Fiat Linea and Goodyear tyres company.

I own a Fiat Linea Emotion Petrol vehicle since May 2009. Even after so many warnings from my near & dear regarding sales & service of Fiat in India, I have purchased this car hoping to get good service after tie-up with Tata. For regular services, there is no major issues but actual thing came when this car met accident.

On fateful day of 29.6.2010, while driving my Linea on NH5 near Kavali in Andhra Pradesh, I have lost control of steering because of front tyre burst on a bridge & hit the parapet wall of bridge head on. I was driving around 80kmph on right lane & suddenly car turned to left because of loss of control due to tyre burst. Same thing has been confirmed by investigation by local police station & recorded in FIR. I have lost complete car because of this accident and Fiat given me an estimate of 10.5 lakhs for repair (actual on road price of car is 8.2 lakhs).

Now comes the actual story. I have reported the incident to Fiat Italy & Goodyear tyres to do proper investigation of this failure. They have directed local dealer of Goodyear and Fiat to look into it. To this I have received a simple reply saying there is no manufacturing defect in the tyre but no reason cited for tyre burst. Even after my repeated mails to them, I have not received any proper answer for the failure till date.

I request all Fiat owners to make sure that they should change their tyres to different make to be safe. Every Linea owner may not be lucky enough to survive like me after meeting such an accident because of faulty tyres supplied along with Fiat Linea.

See the extent of damage can happen to the car by faulty tyres. Please do not recommend any of your near & dears to purchase Fiat cars or any of the vehicles which supplies with Goodyear tyres.

  1. Dear Venu, i feel sorry for your car. and i am happy that you are alive. if it is any other car than FIAT u had no chance to write this blog. i have not heard single case of death during collision in FIAT driving with seat belts on. if the tires are brand new radial tires, there is no chance of tire burst. please go through the link http://www.ehow.com/facts_6048610_radial-tire-safety.html, i can say it is purely your negligence.

  3. Dear Mr.Venu,

I own FIAT Palio petrol 1.6 with same Goodyear tyres. The front, driver side tyre has worn-out to the maximum extent which i could believe when i went to wheel alignment and balancing. The shop technical person said and appreciated about my luck looking at the worst condition of tyre.

The problem we found was, it is the service centres at TATA which is not caring the cars properly. In every annual or 5000 km service, each tyre has to examined and the tyres has to changed from back to front in a sequence based on the amount of wear, which was not done at TATA service centres. The actual problem is that.It was not done in my car also, bcoz of that i could see the metal-wire on the surface of tyre which was about to burst, but probably i was lucky......

It is nothing to with either FIAT or Goodyear. Mr.Venu's kind of problem can happen to any branded vehicle or tyre.

It is mandatory to check the wheel balancing and alignment after every long trip or 5000 km run.

    Thx,

  4. Thanks dD for your observation.
Whenever I go for long drives, I do inspect the car in all respects specially tyre condition and air pressure. I have inspected tyres and air pressure half an hour before the accident while filling the fuel.
It was driven less than 10k km.
My apprehension in this case is nobody, either from Fiat or from Goodyear given a concluded report of reason for tyre burst.

And to Mr Karthik, What do you think. I am so negligent to risk my complete family and turn my car to 90 degrees to hit parapet wall on a bridge at 80kmph speed. Do you think I am mad?

  5. Dear All,

On my way to home town Kolhapur from Mumbai on NH4, I was driving my Fiat Linea Diesel Emotion. It was 11 PM and we had crossed a place named Kagal. I was driving at around 100 plus when suddenly we hit a pothole. The pothole left a deep cut of 2 inches on sidewall of left-front good year GT3. I did not lose control neither car wobbled neither steering turned substantially. I lifted my foot from accelerator pedal and applied breaks. The car stopped within few seconds and within 10-15 meters. No damage and nothing!

This is one of the safest car I have driven in this category. I love fiat.
